Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. DAVE HARRINGTON – “I’M NOT A DREAM”

Darkside’s Dave Harrington has announced new album The Pictures which will be out October 20. He plays nearly every instrument on the album which is described as “the most sprawling, and the most personal, album Dave Harrington has ever made. It’s a love letter to the cinema. It’s a showcase for his eclectic taste. It’s a quiet nod to his father. It’s a love song to his family. It’s a heady journey through abstraction and back.” You can listen to the album’s opening cut now.

MYRKUR – “VALKYRIERNES SANG”

Myrkur’s new album Spine is out later this month (pre-order our exclusive evergreen vinyl variant, limited to 300 copies), and the latest single is “Valkyriernes Sang,” where her ethereal vocals float over heavy musical backing. ““I wrote this song after diving into different interpretations of the old Norse sagas again, particularly Njál’s saga and the poems about the valkyrier – ‘Spydsangen’ (‘The Song of the Spear’),” she says. “I have always been fascinated with the figures of Valkyrier in Norse mythology, their power, their role in the battles, in Valhalla and with Odin.”

SUPERCHUNK – “IN BETWEEN DAYS” (THE CURE COVER)

Superchunk’s Misfits & Mistakes: Singles, B-sides & Strays 2007–2023 is out at the end of October and of of the nuggets they’ve dusted off is this cover of The Cure’s “In Between Days” which was recorded for The AV Club’s “Undercover” video series.

BABEHOVEN – “CHARIOT”

“‘Chariot’ is about changing perspectives; it is about sparkling through the chaos,” Babehoven’s Maya Bon say of the duo’s pensive new single. “To be whole, fresh, full of water, full of life. To glide through the winding paths as a lesson in malleability. Ryan and I collaborated in a new way on this song: he wrote a guitar part I liked, I wrote some lyrics, we wrote a chorus together. We explored songwriting as a team in the dead of upstate winter in 2023, finding solace in the slippery, cherry-red warmth of its sound.” It arrives as they begin a tour with Slow Pulp.

HAUSCHKA – “INVENTIONS”

Volker Bertelmann releases his new Hauschka album Philanthropy in a couple weeks and today has shared its final pre-release single. It comes with a gorgeous video directed by Wataru Sato. “The video provides a captivating glimpse into the multifaceted aspects of everyday life in Japan,” says Bertelmann. “It skillfully captures both the fast-paced, hyper-modern lifestyle and the serene moments deeply rooted in its rich history and culture, finding expression in poetry and carpentry. It showcases that there’s not one answer, and that joy and serenity can be found in everything, from arts and crafts to the meticulous work of a train conductor.”

It felt like a perfect metaphor: standing outside and wishing so badly to be let in, when really… wrong house. This song is about relief and hope as much as it is about yearning and desperation – the anticipation of thinking that maybe this is it, this is what the bad times were worth pushing through for, this is when I finally get to put some furniture down and call this place home.”

HOT CHIP – “FIRE OF MERCY” (YUNÈ PINKU REMIX)

“After featuring on the original version, it was really cool to get the opportunity to reimagine the track in a different way,” says yunè pinku of her remix of her collab single with Hot Chip. “Hot Chip are such icons within the electronic space – it’s been a huge pleasure to be able to collaborate in this way with them.” Hot Chip add: “yunè pinku was a delight to work with in the studio on Fire of Mercy and other tunes we were jamming on, and we’re so pleased she’s turned in this banger of a remix on top of the collaboration!”
