DC punk legends Scream are gearing up to release DC Special, their first album in 30 years, in just a couple weeks. They’ve just made a video for the album’s first single / opening track, “DC Special Sha La La,” which was shot and directed by Fugazi/Messthetics drummer Brendan Canty. The video pays homage to Gil Scott-Heron‘s “Washington D.C” by recreating some of the shots from that, and frontman Pete Stahl offers some commentary on his hometown as well. The video premieres in this post, and you can watch that (and Gil Scott-Heron’s video) below.

“The song ‘DC Special Sha La La’ pays homage to our town and is celebratory of a certain place and time,” the band tell us. “With this album, we wanted to tell our story through collaboration with our music community. We made this video in the same spirit. Our good friend Brendan Canty beautifully filmed and edited this video. We are so grateful for his time and artistry.”

“Pulling from local music history and paying tribute to Gil Scott-Heron’s song and video ‘Washington DC,’ we are visually creating a thread from then to now,” Scream continue. “By using the same backdrop Heron used — of our hometown monuments along the waters we come from — and connecting a recent live performance at the MLK library, we hope the video and song create connections, encourage joy and bring love to all.”
