Tinariwen, Bellowhead, De La Soul, Aurelio and Dona Onete are among the first acts announced for this year’s WOMAD Charlton Park Festival from July 24-26
The UK’s premier world music blast returns to Charlton Park this summer. WOMAD continues to expand in a variety of global incarnations with events in Chile, Cáceres, New Zealand and WOMADelaide all taking place in 2015.
Celebrating 25 years since the release of their seminal debut 3 Feet High and Rising, hip-hop pioneers De La Soul will grace the WOMAD stage for the first time on Friday night. Tinariwen are now certified veterans of WOMAD and folk’s favourite big-band Bellowhead continue to reaffirm their status as one of the UK’s best live acts.
Following the death of Andy Palacio, Aurelio has since established himself as the foremost ambassador for Garifuna culture and Lándini was one of our Best Albums of 2014. Other confirmed acts include the grande dame of Amazonian song Dona Onete, Molotov Jukebox fronted by Game of Thrones’ Natalia Tena, female griot Sona Jobarteh and Acholi Machon, a group of musicians from the Acholi tribe on the northern border of Uganda.
